20 Under 20
The Thiel Fellowship is a program started by Peter Thiel, an American entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and hedgefund manager. Thiel cofounded PayPal with Max Levchin and Elon Musk and served as its CEO. He also cofounded Palantir, of which he is chairman. He serves as president of Clarium Capital, a global macro hedge fund with $700 million inassets under management; a managing partner in Founders Fund, a venture capital fund with $2 billion in assets under management; and cofounder and investment committee chair of Mithril Capital Management. He was also the first outside investor in Facebook. It is clear that he knows a thing or two about business!
What Thiel decided to do was create the Thiel fellowship, which pays 20 people under 20 years old to forgo college and work on an entrepreneurial venture. There have been many educators and colleges that are against this philosophy of forgoing college (arguably the most important stage of education in the lives of students), but I say for those who are truly entrepreneurs, real life experience developing their own company is one of the best educational experiences possible. This video highlights the first 20 Thiel Fellowship members and gives some insight into the story of the Thiel Fellowship!
